Women's Soccer earns a point in conference opening draw with Kansas City

St. Paul, Minn. - The St. Thomas Women's Soccer Team opened Summit League play with a 1-1 draw with Kansas City, earning their first point of the season in conference play.
"I thought we started out a little bit slow, the rain made it a little harder for us to keep our possession game that we typically play quickly," said Head Coach Sheila McGill. "I thought we had some players that stepped up today and did a really great job."
In a drizzly first half, the Tommies and the Roos battled through a scoreless first 45 minutes. The first-half shutout continued the trend of strong defensive starts by St. Thomas, which hasn't allowed a first-half goal this season.
The Purple posted two shots on goal, both by sophomore forward Abby Brantner, compared to one shot on goal by the Roos.
Freshman McKenna Lehman scored her first collegiate goal for the Tommies first goal of the contest. The score came in the 58th minute with an assist from sophomore Mariah Nguyen. The Roos scored their goal in the 79th minute to bring the game to the 1-1 draw.
The Tommies return to action Sunday as they continue Summit League action against Oral Roberts. Kickoff is slated for noon at South Field.
