Football rushes out to an early lead, can’t overcome Southern Utah’s speed

9/1/2022 11:25:00 PM | Football

Cedar City, Utah – The St. Thomas Football Team opened its season on the road at Southern Utah with a 44-13 loss.

The Tommies wasted no time rushing out to a quick lead with a two-play, 75-yard drive fueled by a 60-yard rush by sophomore RB Hope Adebayo on the first play of the 2022 campaign. Sophomore RB Shawn Shipman found the endzone on the next play from 15 yards out.

The Thunderbirds connected on a 27-yard field goal with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter and added a touchdown with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter to claim a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

With 11:46 to play in the first half, SUU connected on a 64-yard touchdown pass to open a 10-point, 17-7 lead. On the ensuing St. Thomas drive, the Tommies were marching before a fumble ended the Purple's drive.

Trying to get their offense going, the Tommies went for it on fourth-and-10 at the SUU 34-yard line. Senior QB Cade Sexauer completed a 12-yard strike to sophomore TE Aiden Carlson to keep the drive alive. With 1:06 to play in the first half, the Tommies faced their second fourth down of the drive, this time a Sexauer pass landed incomplete intended for senior RB Joshua Komis allowing the Thunderbirds to take a 20-7 lead into halftime.

Despite trailing by 13 at half, the Tommies out-gained the Thunderbirds 303 yards to 263 yards. Sexauer completed 9-of-18 passing attempts for 132 yards and Adebayo added 76 first-half yards.

St. Thomas had a first-and-goal at the six-yard line in the third quarter before a holding penalty backed them up to the 15-yard line for a first-and-goal from the 15. Once again going for it on fourth down from the nine-yard line, a Sexauer pass to Komis resulted in six points for the Purple. The Tommies went for two points but failed on the attempt, cutting the Thunderbird lead to 28-13 with 4:41 remaining in the third. The Thunderbirds added three more points to open a 31-13 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Tommies were unable to get anything going in the fourth quarter, falling by a score of 44-13.

As a team, St. Thomas posted 180 rushing yards, threw for 282 and posted 462 yards from scrimmage. The Tommie defense limited the Thunderbirds to 3.7 yards per rushing attempt.

Sexauer posted a career-high 207 passing yards, while completing 15-of-29 passing attempts with one touchdown and one interception for a 116.2 QB rating. The duo of Adebayo and Shipman finished with 76 and 72 yards, respectively. Junior WR Jacob Wildermuth posted a team-best 66 receiving yards.

The Tommies return home to face Michigan Tech on Saturday, Sept. 10 for the first of two-consecutive home games.
