Volleyball drops both matches on first day of the Bobcat Classic

Bozeman, Mont. – The St. Thomas Volleyball Team dropped both of its matches on the first day of the Bobcat Classic hosted by Montana State University.
The Tommies fell, 3-0, to Grand Canyon in the first match of the season. Later in the day, the Purple fell to San Francisco in straight sets in a tightly-contested match.
St. Thomas held a 19-16 lead in the first set of the match, before Grand Canyon rattled off nine-straight points to earn the win. The Antelopes went on to win the next two sets 25-12 and 25-15.
Against GCU, St. Thomas struggled offensively as they tallied 14 kills on 65 attempts. St. Thomas was led offensively by sophomore Lauren Galvin who finished the match with five kills and one service ace. Senior Carrie Rutledge led the Tommies defensive efforts with nine digs, she also added one service ace.
The Tommies showed improvement in their second match of the day against San Francisco, a match that featured 15 ties and six lead changes. St. Thomas forced an extra points in set 1, eventually falling by a score of 27-25. The Purple dropped the second and third sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.
Galvin posted 10 kills with one error and hit .346 against the USF, and sophomore Libby Mattila contributed seven kills. Freshman Allie Kopp added 17 assists.
St. Thomas wraps up the Bobcat Classic against MSU at 2:00 p.m. CT tomorrow.
