Sioux Falls, S.D. -- Tommie Men's Soccer was picked for sixth place out of nine teams in the 2022 Summit League Preseason Poll, compiled through voting of the conference head coaches.
Denver and Oral Roberts took the first and second spots after they shared the league title in 2021. Denver won two league playoff games via penalty kicks to claim the 2021 Summit postseason crown and automatic NCAA tourney berth. DU lost in overtime to eventual NCAA champion Clemson in the second round NCAA tournament. That was Denver's eighth conference tourney championship in nine years.
Omaha, Kansas City, Western Illinois and St. Thomas are slotted 3-4-5-6 in the poll.
Men's Soccer in the The Summit League expands this season from seven to nine teams with the addition of D-I newcomers Lindenwood and Southern Indiana. They join Eastern Illinois as the second and third affiliate members. None of the four Dakota D-I universities field teams in men's soccer.
The conference also recognized 18 athletes as Players to Watch for 2022, including Tommie senior defender Jack Gleckler and sophomore defender Charlie Holton.
St. Thomas had a frustrating start to its 2021 debut season in Division I and The Summit League. The Purple went 0-11-2 over the first 13 games, with five one-goal losses. The team stayed focused and won its final three contests over Omaha, UW-Milwaukee and Kansas City, the latter with a late comeback that forced overtime. Coach Jon Lowery returns 14 players for 2022 and has four transfers and 12 freshmen also in the mix for playing time.
