Minneapolis, Minn. - Brett Bateman and Boston Merila each had three hits to lead the host Minnesota Gophers to a 9-0 win over Tommie Baseball in non-conference play Wednesday night at Siebert Field.
Four Minnesota hurlers combined on a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to slow a St. Thomas team that came in with victories in five of their previous six games. It was just the third shutout loss of the season for the Purple (10-23), all to Power 5 teams.
The Gophers avenged a 6-0 loss to St. Thomas from last week on the same field. They scored all nine runs in the first three innings, including four unearned.
Sam Kulesa, Parker Mathieson and Jonah Hoeg had the lone hits for the Toms.
Freshman Kevin Millar got his first start on the mound and allowed two first-inning runs. Jeremy Klick was touched for eight runs (four unearned) in the next two innings. Freshman Colin Dailey, Will Nigut, Will Jackson and Sam Schlecht worked the last 4 1-3 innings and combined to allow just one walk and one hit with seven strikeouts.
St. Thomas has a home three-game Summit League series starting Friday against Western Illinois.
