Game Notes - Baseball takes on W. Illinois for home series

Rain in the Saturday/Sunday forecast prompted the schedule change to a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader at Koch Diamond. The series' final game will be played Saturday or Sunday afternoon, depending on the weather.
St. Thomas has won five of its last seven games and has won back-to-back weekend series by 2-1 margins at Tarleton State and at home vs. Northern Colorado.
The Toms are batting .271 (77-for-281) over their last eight games after hitting just .212 over their first 25 games.
After this weekend, the Toms play their next 10 games on the road. That includes two next Tuesday at Milwaukee, then three next weekend in Tulsa, Okla., at Oral Roberts.

Last Time Out
The Tommies lost 9-0 Wednesday night at Minnesota, getting shutout for just the third time in 2022. The Toms split last Saturday with a 5-4 win and 7-4 loss against Northern Colorado. They came back Sunday and led 6-2, but needed a late rally to win 8-6. Tommie pitchers rang up 32 strikeouts and the Toms outhit UNC 29-26 on the series.
Summit League Honor
On Monday, sophomore Kolby Gartner was named Summit League Ticket Smarter Pitcher of the Week.
Gartner recorded his first Division I win with his team's first complete game pitching outing of 2022 as he shut out Minnesota 6-0 April 19 on the road. The righthander from St. Michael-Albertville High allowed three hits and three walks and struck out nine. This was the Toms' first complete-game by a pitcher in its debut D-I season. Gartner lowered his ERA to 4.03 and has 29 strikeouts in 29 innings. He didn't allow a Minnesota player past second base.
Western Illinois
Western Illinois has been a hardluck team on many days in 2022. WIU has 13 losses by three or less runs, and is 0-8 in one run decisions. Its record includes
an 0-5 mark vs. Power 5 teams. The Leathernecks went 1-2 in Summit League series against North Dakota State and South Dakota State, and had four one- or two-run losses vs. Oral Roberts and Northern Colorado. WIU is batting .252 led by Nick Mitchell and Kory Olsen with 42 hits each, and averages five runs and eight hits a game. It has six seniors and 14 juniors on a 36-player roster.
