St. Paul, Minn. - Fifth-year senior hurler Graham Laubscher had another strong start and Jake Porter's two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning scored two insurance runs as Tommie Baseball scored a 4-1 win over Western Illinois in game one of Friday's Summit League doubleheader at Koch Diamond.
St. Thomas (11-24) dropped game two, 11-1. The Leathernecks (5-34) stroked three home runs and 15 hits total off four Tommie pitchers and rode a seven-inning complete game by Chandler Fochs.
Depending on the weather, the teams will play the final nine-inning game of the series either Saturday or Sunday afternoon on the Toms' diamond. Saturday's forecast has a 90 percent chance of widespread rain in the region. A decision will be made on Saturday morning on what day the game will be held.
Grind It Out
In the opener, Tommie junior closer T.J. Constertina got his first Division I save as he got the final four outs with no runs allowed. He lowered his season ERA to 0.95 over 19 innings.
Laubscher worked 7 2-3 innings and allowed one run, four hits, four walks and two HBP with six strike outs. He was helped by two double plays and two other runners tagged out on the bases looking to steal or advance.
Over his last four starts, Laubscher is 2-0 with 24 strikeouts over 27 innings and a 1.67 ERA.
The Toms outhit WIU, 7-4. They scored one in the fourth inning as Brigs Richartz singled, Ben Vujovich reached on a bunt single, and Sam Kulesa slapped an RBI hit.
The Purple added three runs in the sixth inning as Kyle Halverson walked, was bunted over to second, and scored on Vujovich's RBI double. Kulesa followed with a single, and Porter laced a doubled into center to plate two more for a 4-0 lead.
The Leathernecks used a walk, a single and an RBI single to open the eighth inning and pull within 4-1. But the Toms turned a 4-6-3 double play to get two key outs. Constertina relieved and got a strike out to end the frame.
Game two was all Western Illinois. Nick Mitchell went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and an RBI single, and Cory Olson had three hits. Fochs didn't walk a batter and scattered seven hits for the winners.
Seven different Toms recorded one hit on the game.
