St. Paul, Minn. - Freshman Evan Esch threw four shutout innings to claim his first Division I mound victory and six different Toms recorded at least one RBI in Sunday's 12-2 St. Thomas Baseball win over Western Illinois at Koch Diamond.
The Tommies (12-24 overall, 6-9 Summit) have won seven of their last 10 games. They claimed a three-game series win by a 2-1 margin for the third consecutive weekend: they previously won two out of three games at Tarleton State April 15-16; won two of three at home April 23-24 vs. Northern Colorado; and did the same again at home here against Western Illinois after splitting Friday's doubleheader.
St. Thomas broke to a 9-0 lead through six innings and later scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest via a 10-run rule.
Esch (1-3) allowed two hits and one walk with four strikeouts, and left with a 4-0 lead after four innings. In four Summit League appearances over 21 1-3 innings, the lefty has a 2.53 ERA with 22 strikeouts and nine walks.
Redshirt sophomore Duke Coborn allowed one earned run over three innings of relief and secured his first D-I save.
The Purple slapped 13 hits with their second best scoring output of the season. Sam Kulesa went 3-for-5 with three RBI; Max Moris went 3-for-4 with an RBI; Brigs Richartz went 2-for-3 with three RBI; Kyle Halverson had a pair of RBI singles; Jonah Hoeg had an RBI single; and Tommy Golbranson added an RBI with a seventh-inning sac fly.
Kulesa went 6-for-11 on the three weekend games and ran his hitting streak to six games.
The Toms are scheduled to play their next 10 games on the road starting with Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Milwaukee, and continuing next weekeend in Tulsa with three Summit League tests against conference co-leader Oral Roberts.
