Long ball not enough for Softball in Saturday's losses

3/19/2022 7:24:00 PM | Softball

Tampa, Fla. - St. Thomas softball (3-20) had its offense woken up in a pair of losses on Saturday. The team was defeated by Canisius (9-8), 11-7, and Lehigh (7-11), 8-5.

The Tommies found themselves trailing, 3-0, when freshman Cassidy Carby came up to the plate with Brooke Ellestad and Sarah Hudson on base. On the first pitch that she saw, Carby powered a game-tying three-run home run over the outfield fence, evening the score at 3-3.

After the Griffs retook the lead, in the bottom of the fifth down 6-3, Carby launched another three-run home run over the fence, going to left field to drive in Hudson and Coryn Jacobson. The six RBI in a game set a new single-game program record for the Division I level, as were Carby's two home runs in the contest.

In extras, Ellestad tallied a game-tying RBI single up the middle, scoring freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Raymond. A three-run ninth inning by the Griffs would be too much for the Tommies. Hudson and Carby both finished with two runs against Canisius. Hudson led the team with three base hits.

Kendall Hopkins got the start, allowing six earned runs in 4.1 innings, and striking out five. Junior Isabelle True did not allow an earned run over 4.2 innings and struck out three batters.

In game two on the day, St. Thomas pounced to an early 3-0 lead against Lehigh, helped by an RBI ground out from Hudson and a two-run home run from Ellestad. Ellestad's long ball tied her with Carby for the team lead in home runs (4).

Following a four-run bottom of the third by the Mountain Hawks, pitcher Christina Crawford hit the first home run of her collegiate career, tying the score at 4-4. St. Thomas would momentarily retake the lead on a Raymond single to right center that allowed Kenzie Miller to touch home plate.

The Tommie pitching staff struggled to miss Lehigh bats, amassing just one punch out across six innings. Grace Bennett, a sophomore pitcher, did not allow a run in an inning of relief work.
