Three-goal third period highlights Women's Hockey's comeback at St. Cloud State
2/5/2022 4:54:00 PM | Women's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Thomas women's hockey (5-20-1, 3-17-1 WCHA) rallied for a 3-2 win after trailing by two scores in the third period at St. Cloud State (8-16-2, 3-15-2 WCHA) on Saturday.
The Tommies were aided by nine penalties committed by the Huskies in the thrilling come-from-behind victory. Acting head coach Bethany Brausen earned her first victory since absorbing the role.
Neither team found the net in the opening period of play, as the Huskies amassed 18 shots on goal, and the Tommies totaled 14 shots at the goal. The first 20 minutes relatively clean, with zero penalties assessed to either squad. The Tommies dominated on faceoffs, winning 15-7 against the Huskies.
The second period was dominated offensively by St. Cloud State, as the Huskies scored twice, one of which came on a short-handed opportunity. The Tommies were limited to 13 shots on goal, 10 less than the Huskies. Three penalties were called on SCSU in the period, but all three of the Tommie power-plays were halted.
A three-score period by the Tommies provided the comeback effort the team needed, halting a 15-game losing streak. The first St. Thomas goal was scored on a 5-on-3 power-play situation, as senior Megan Cornell found the net on assists from Anna Solheim and Brieja Parent. A few moments later, freshman Abby Promersberger scored her team-high-tying fifth goal, helped by Anna Erickson and Allie Monrean. Solheim gave the Tommies their first lead of the game with a goal scored with 4:12 left in the game. Solheim's game-winning goal was assisted by Lauren Stenslie and Maija Almich.
Alexa Dobchuk, a senior goaltender for St. Thomas, earned her second win of the season. Her previous win came at RIT on Oct. 30 in a 2-1 effort. Against the Huskies, Dobchuk totaled 33 saves and did not allow a power-play goal. She has now tallied 32 or more saves in five of her last six starts.
