Softball battles in a pair of tough 5-3 losses on Saturday

Youngsville, La. - St. Thomas softball (2-7) was dropped by Nicholls (3-10) and Northwestern State (9-5) in a pair of 5-3 losses on Saturday.
The Tommies led midway, 2-0, and then 3-1 against the Colonels before Nicholls put together a comeback in the team's first game of the day at the Mardi Gras Mambo.
Following three-straight scoreless frames from senior pitcher Megan Baniecke, the Toms opened the bottom of the third with a walk and a single from freshmen Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad, giving the team runners on first and second with one out. The two frosh players then stole second and third, setting up a pair of RISP for junior outfielder Coryn Jacobson. Jacobson lined a single to the opposite field to score both, giving the Purple a 2-0 advantage.
Baniecke responded with a 1-2-3 top of the fourth, but in the fifth inning, the Colonels received a two-run home run with two outs to battle back and tie the game at 2-2. It would not take long for the Tommies to score, as Ellestad continued her early season success at the plate, singling to right field and scoring catcher Maddie Grad.
The Nicholls offense could not be contained in the sixth, rattling off three runs, in what would be the final frame of scoring in the game. Baniecke would allow four runs in 5.1 innings, with Lauren Berridge entering and allowing a run without an out. Freshman Christina Crawford struck out three batters without allowing a runner to score in 1.2 innings of relief work.
In the second game of the day, it was the Tommies that attempted a late comeback attempt, but the attempt was halted in the team's second-straight 5-3 loss.
Ellestad, who finished the day with five hits at the plate and two RBI, hit the second home run of her career in the bottom of the first inning to put the Purple up, 1-0.
After four runs crossed the plate for Northwestern State in the second and third innings, three of which were unearned, the Tommies found themselves trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth. Sarah Hudson, a senior third baseman, lined a single to left field to drive in Ellestad and cut the deficit in half. Hudson's RBI base hit was one of three in the game for the senior.
The third run of the game for St. Thomas would come in the bottom of the sixth on a Raymond single to right field, scoring Grad. The run brought the Purple within one run of the Demons; however, the opposition would plate a run of their own in the top of the sixth.
Three of the St. Thomas freshman in the starting lineup against Northwestern State combined for five hits in 11 plate appearances. The top of the batting order for the Toms went 7-16 against the Demons.
