Bemidji, Minn. -- The host Bemidji State Beavers never trailed and used a late empty-net goal to secure a 5-3 victory over St. Thomas in Friday night's CCHA men's hockey clash.
It was St. Thomas' first men's hockey game played in Bemidji since a non-conference series split in the 1998-99 season.
Neither team was whistled for a penalty in the contest, which saw the host Beavers outshoot the Toms, 44-22.
Senior Joey Sofo contributed a goal and an assist for the Tommies (3-29-1 overall, 3-21-1 CCHA). Peter Thome stopped 39 of 43 shots.
Grant Loven scored a second-period goal to even the score at 1-1.
BSU scored three mid-game goals to lead 4-1 before the Toms' Luke Manning (8:43 left) and Sofo (1:40 to play) found the back of the net anf cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Purple pulled their goalie with 93 seconds to go, but BSU converted an empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining to close out the two-goal win.
St. Thomas coach Rico Blasi said on his Skor North Radio postgame interview that his team didn't bring the intensity it needed to win a CCHA road game.
"I don't think we played very well tonight," Blasi said. "There's really no excuse for it. It's probably on me for not having them ready to play.
"We did some good things individually, but then (others) have to follow that up on the next couple of shifts, and we weren't able to do that."
The teams close the weekend series and the regular season Saturday at BSU with a 6:07 p.m. start.
