Despite a strong shooting effort, women’s basketball falls at Kansas City

Kansas City, Mo. – The St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team (6-18, 3-11), fell to the Kansas City Roos (20-5, 10-4) for the second time in 11 days, this time in Kansas City by a score of 69-53.
 
St. Thomas had one of its better shooting performances as of late, the Tommies connected on 22-of-47 shots (47 percent) from the field, and 5-of-12 (42 percent) from deep. The Purple only attempted seven free throws in the game and connected on four of them (57 percent). St. Thomas was plagued with 17 turnovers in the game which led to 19 Kansas City points.
 
The Roos raced out to an early 8-2 in the first quarter and outscored the Tommies 20-12 through the first 10 minutes of the ball game. In the opening frame, St. Thomas connected on 50 percent of its shots, but was only able to get 10 shots up. Freshman C Jo Langbehn led the scoring efforts with four points in quarter one.
 
In the second quarter, both teams put up 11 points. Kansas City took a 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. St. Thomas and Kansas City each cooled off from the field in the second quarter, the Purple shot 36 percent from the field and limited the Roos to a 33 percent showing from the field in the second quarter.
 
The Tommies were able to make it a single-digit game, cutting the Roo lead to 44-35 with 3:44 to play in the third quarter by way of a three-point shot from freshman G Jade Hill. Kansas City finished the third quarter on a 9-4 run to open a 53-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Roos outscored the Tommies 16-14 despite St. Thomas outshooting Kansas City from the field. In the fourth quarter, the Purple connected on 6-of-12 shots from the field and 2-of-5 shots from deep but couldn't overcome the Roos as Kansas City earned the 69-53 win.
 
Individually, grad student F Erin Norling led the scoring efforts with 14 points on a 6-of-9 shooting effort, which included a 2-of-2 showing from behind the arc. Hill added nine points and a team-high four assists. Senior G Maggie Negaard hauled in a team-best seven rebounds.
 
The Tommies return home Thursday as they host the University of South Dakota in Schoenecker Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
