Women’s Basketball can’t overcome strong second half by USD

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Basketball Team (6-19, 3-12) held its ground against the University of South Dakota (21-5, 14-1) in the first half, but a 25-point third quarter by the Yotes propelled them to victory.
 
The Coyotes raced out to an 8-2 lead halfway through the first quarter. Freshman G Jade Hill posted St. Thomas' first bucket of the game. That score would double for each team after the first quarter, USD led 16-4.
 
The Tommies opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run bringing the score to 18-10 in favor of the Coyotes with 7:41 to play in the second quarter. The Tommies clawed their way back to within three points, 20-23 with 3:15 to play in the first half. The two teams exchanged buckets the remainder of the second quarter with USD taking a 31-25 into half.
 
St. Thomas connected on 8-of-19 (42 percent) of its shots from the field and 44 percent (4-of-9) from deep in the first half. The Tommies committed 11 first-half turnovers which led to eight points by USD.
 
Individually, grad student F Erin Norling had a perfect shooting first half, she went 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from deep with two rebounds.
 
Through the first four minutes of the third quarter, USD outscored the Tommies 11-5 to open up a 42-30 lead with six minutes to play in the third. The Coyotes outscored the Tommies 25-15 in the third quarter to open a 56-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
USD held St. Thomas to only six points in the fourth quarter to earn the 73-46 win.
 
As a team, St. Thomas connected on 31 percent (14-of-45) of its shots from the field and 33 percent (5-of-15) from deep and finished the game with 19 turnovers.
 
Individually, Hill led the team with 14 points, highlighted by a 7-of-8 showing from the charity stripe. After a hot first half, the Yotes defense clamped down Norling, who finished with 11 points.
 
The Tommies return to action at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Schoenecker Arena as they play South Dakota State in their final home game of the 2021-22 season.
