Chicago, Ill. - St. Thomas softball (2-0) started the season with a bang, picking up wins over Ball State (0-1) and Eastern Illinois (0-2) on Friday. Both wins were the first in the NCAA DI-era and were the first two wins under first-year head coach Jennifer Bagley Trotter.
In the team's first game against Ball State, the Tommies rallied from down two runs to pull out a win against the Cardinals. Senior Megan Baniecke got the start on the mound for the Tommies and pitched five innings of two-run ball, striking out five, and earning the win. Freshman Christina Crawford secured the save with a scoreless seventh inning.
St. Thomas opened the scoring with a Sarah Hudson sacrifice fly to center field to score Kaitlyn Raymond. After Ball State tied the game, 1-1, with a fourth inning single, the Tommies hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 3-1. Freshman Cassidy Carby and Hudson each powered a long ball over the fence, including Carby's first-collegiate homer.
Ball State would put together a four-run fifth inning to go up 5-3 on the Purple but were unable to contain a Tommie rally. Baniecke and Carby tallied RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to even up the scoring at 5-5. Sophomore Kenzie Miller notched the go-ahead RBI on a sac fly to right field, scoring Sydney Mickett.
Seven different Tommies recorded a base hit in the opening game of the season. Carby and Hudson were tied for the lead on the team with two runs driven in, each. Hudson also scored two runs for St. Thomas.
In game two against Eastern Illinois, the Tommie offense erupted for 12 runs to propel the team to victory.
Lauren Berridge earned the win in relief, pitching one inning for the Tommies. Crawford pitched three innings, while Isabelle True made her debut for the Tommies and picked up a save after tossing three innings.
St. Thomas scored eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by three-straight doubles from Coryn Jacobson, Hudson, and Carby. Jacobson's double drove in two runs, while the other two doubles were one-RBI base hits. Ellestad added an RBI-single on a base hit to left field for the Tommies.
Following a three-run bottom of the second by the Panthers, the Toms responded with a Hudson infield single to score Ellestad. Trailing 9-4 entering the fourth inning, Eastern Illinois would rattle off four runs to cut the deficit to one run.
Ellestad, following a consistent trend of widening the gap when the Panthers would narrow it, hit her first-career home run on an opposite bomb to left field. Ellestad would add an RBI-single in the seventh inning, giving her a three-RBI game.
Four Tommies finished with multiple RBI, including Ellestad, who led the team with three runs driven in. Ellestad also scored four runs, helping to power the St. Thomas scoring. As a team, St. Thomas was hit by three pitches.
