Softball stymied on second day of DePaul Dome Tournament

2/12/2022 5:36:00 PM | Softball

Chicago, Ill. - St. Thomas softball (2-2) had its offense halted in losses to Butler (2-1) and DePaul (3-0). The Tommies lost game one, 7-0, and game two, 8-3, on Saturday.

The Tommie offense was limited in the opening game for the team on Saturday against Butler, totaling just three hits. Junior pitcher Isabelle True, receiving the start for St. Thomas, pitched all seven innings and allowed four earned runs. True struck out one Bulldog in the game, while taking the loss.

Both teams were held hitless in the first inning, although the Bulldogs scratched across the game's first run in the top of the second. Butler would add a run in the third, two runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth inning. Down 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth, freshmen Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad picked up back-to-back singles. The two players were stranded on second and third, however, halting the Tommie opportunity to score.

Two of the three St. Thomas baserunners reached in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Coryn Jacobson walked for the Purple and Sara Benner added a base hit, a double, the lone extra-base hit for the Tommies.

A late comeback attempt by the Tommies was stymied by the Blue Demons in game two of the Saturday slate for St. Thomas. Down 4-0 in the top of the sixth, the Toms scored three runs on a Sarah Hudson long ball, her second of the season.

Senior pitcher Megan Baniecke got the start, throwing 5.1 innings, and allowing eight earned runs. Baniecke also struck out five. Senior Kendall Hopkins struck out one batter in two-thirds innings of relief.

The Tommie offense had trouble getting untracked for a majority of the game. Trailing, 4-0, in the top of the sixth, Raymond and Ellestad led off the inning with singles to set the stage for Hudson. With two runners on, Hudson lined a shot over the left field fence, bringing the Tommies within one run.

Following the three-running inning, the Blue Demonds would respond with a grand slam in the bottom of the frame to put away the game.
