Softball tripped up in 5-2 loss to Seattle

2/13/2022 2:15:00 PM | Softball

Chicago, Ill. - St. Thomas softball (2-3) fell to undefeated Seattle (5-0), 5-2, on Sunday in the final game of the DePaul Dome Tournament. Seattle was bolstered by a three-run bottom of the first inning.

Freshman righty Christina Crawford got the starting nod on the mound and tossed 3.1 innings while letting up five earned runs. Crawford struck out two batters but was tagged with the loss. Senior Kendall Hopkins, from Las Vegas, Nev., came on in relief and threw 2.2 strong shutout innings, striking out two, and allowing just one base hit.

The St. Thomas offense was led on the day by freshman outfielder Kaitlyn Raymond, as the newcomer recorded two RBIs and two base hits. The first of the runs for the team came in the bottom of the second, trailing by three, on a Raymond single to shortstop. This allowed Coryn Jacobson to race home and put the Toms on the board.

Narrowing the gap to one run, Raymond recorded another RBI on a single up the middle to score Maddie Grad. Seattle would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to re-take a three-run lead.

Senior infielder Nicole Pieper buoyed the bottom portion of the St. Thomas lineup, as she amassed a base hit and a walk, reaching base twice. The first and last batter for the Tommies combined for three hits, two RBI, and a walk.
