Softball offense halted against Louisiana Tech, No. 15 Louisiana

2/25/2022 7:38:00 PM | Softball

Youngsville, La. - St. Thomas softball (2-5) was swept on Friday by Louisiana Tech (7-4) and No. 15 Louisiana (8-1) on Friday at the Mardi Gras Mambo in Youngsville, La.

In game one against Louisiana Tech, the Tommies started off the scoring on a throwing error by the Bulldog third baseman, allowing freshman shortstop Brooke Ellestad to race home. Ellestad reached to begin the contest with a single through the right side of the infield. She has a base hit in five of six games to begin the campaign.

The other St. Thomas run scored against Louisiana Tech came in the top of the fourth inning. After a Christina Crawford single to start the frame, Ellestad lined a single to right, scoring pinch runner Adrianna Young. That run brought the Tommies within one score of the Bulldogs, 3-2.

Crawford got the starting nod on the mound, allowing six earned runs, in three innings of work. Crawford struggled to find the strike zone against the 'Dogs, giving up seven free passes to the opposing team. Kendall Hopkins, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., let up three runs in one and two-thirds innings, striking out two.

The Tommies defense struggled against the Bulldogs, as the team finished with four errors, their most in any game this season.

Facing the first ranked opponent in program history, No. 15 Louisiana scored early, putting up five runs on St. Thomas in the first two innings. The Tommie offense did not amass a base hit against the Ragin' Cajuns.

Senior Megan Baniecke got the start and gave up five earned runs in an inning and two-thirds. Hopkins came in relief for the fourth-straight game and allowed four earns runs, while junior Isabelle True let up one run in one inning.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored in every inning, including three of the fourth innings being of the multi-run variety. The loss marks the second time that the Tommies have been shutout this season.
