Women’s Basketball hot start ends with 61-51 loss to Jackrabbits

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Women's Basketball jumped on South Dakota State early Saturday afternoon in Summit League action before a 61-51 loss at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minn. The Tommies opened the game on an 8-0 run and nearly made a double-digit comeback against the conference's top team in the standings.
 
The Purple are now 5-9 overall and 0-4 in the Summit League after trailing by as many as 15 points against the Jackrabbits. St. Thomas outscored SDSU, 17-8, in the third quarter and later pulled to within three points.
 
The first-half 3-pointers began to fall nearly four minutes into gameplay as Maggie Negaard sank her first of four from long range, capping an 8-0 run to begin the game. She scored eight of the first 13 St. Thomas points to hold a 13-6 advantage.
 
The Purple struggled to shoot after the seven-point lead and finished the quarter 0-of-5 from the floor to allow the Jackrabbits to take their final lead of the game. St. Thomas went six minutes without a score and finished the first half shooting 37 percent from the floor, with five of its 10 field goals coming from 3-point range, on its way to a 39-26 halftime deficit.
 
The Jackrabbits scored first to open the second half, marking its only field goal of the third quarter. The Tommies took advantage and hit 4-of-7 from the field while limiting the Jackrabbits to 0-of-7 shooting in the quarter to pull within four, 47-43.
 
Following a layup by SDSU to start the fourth quarter, Alexis Pratt sank her first 3-pointer and field goal of the game to draw within three, 49-46. The Tommies stayed within three until 6:52 left in the game before the Jackrabbits began a game-ending 10-3 run.
 
The Tommies finished shooting 35.3 percent from the field (18-51) and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc (7-15) while the Jackrabbits shot 36.8 percent from the floor (21-57) and 22.2 percent from long range (4-18). St. Thomas gave away 24 turnovers that led to 22 Jackrabbit points and only converted 16 SDSU turnovers into seven points.
 
Negaard led St. Thomas with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. She went 4-of-6 from long range while Jade Hill followed in scoring with eight points.
 
St. Thomas returns to road conference action to start the new year Thursday, Jan. 5 at Denver and Saturday, Jan. 7 at Omaha.
