Jackrabbits take down Tommies to begin weekend

Brookings, S.D. -- St. Thomas Volleyball fell in straight sets Thursday to South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. Sophomore Lauren Galvin led the Tommies (3-23, 1-13 Summit) with 12 kills as the Jackrabbits won by scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25-19.
The match started with five lead changes as freshman Emma Goerger gave the Tommies a 4-3 advantage on her first of five kills followed by a kill from Galvin that put St. Thomas ahead, 12-11. Galvin, sophomore Libby Mattila and junior Ellie Dammann each recorded kills to hold a two-point lead, 15-13. SDSU scored five of the next six points to take the final lead of the set.
The Tommies took a 3-0 lead in the second set and held its final lead of the game on a block assist by Dammann and Mattila. The Jackrabbits scored on seven of the next eight points to pull away for the set win.
After trailing 3-2 to start the third set, a kill by freshman Ava Wild sparked a 5-1 run that gave the Tommies a 6-4 lead. Wild's second and final kill of the night preserved St. Thomas' two-point lead, 8-6. SDSU went on an 8-3 run to take its final lead of the night.
Galvin recorded a .212 hitting percentage while freshman Allie Kopp led the team with 12 assists. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge totaled 11 digs and Rudzitis tied a career-high with three blocks.
St. Thomas wraps up its 2022 road schedule Saturday with a 4:45 p.m. first serve at South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.
