First-place Coyotes take down Tommies in straight sets Saturday

Vermillion, S.D. -- St. Thomas Volleyball was handed a three-set loss Saturday at South Dakota, 21-25, 20-25, 8-25, in Vermillion, S.D. The Tommies fall to 3-24 overall and 1-14 in the Summit League while the Coyotes improve to 24-2 overall and 13-1 in league play.
The Coyotes led by as many as five early in the first set before a comeback by the Tommies to gain the lead, 18-17. Sophomore Lauren Galvin sparked a 6-1 run with one of her six kills during the first set. South Dakota, trailing 20-18, scored seven of the final nine points to steal set one.
The Tommies faced an early 4-0 deficit in set two that grew to seven, 18-11, forcing a St. Thomas timeout. The Purple came out of the break to score five straight points, lastly on a service ace by freshman Tezra Rudzitis to trail by two, 18-16. The USD lead grew back to six, 23-17, when the Tommies scored three straight points.
Galvin led the Tommies with 10 kills and added seven digs with two block assists. Freshman Emma Goerger accounted for six of St. Thomas' 16 blocks in the match. Freshman Keya Luta Win Hunt paced the team with 11 assists while sophomore Ella Wheatcraft led with 11 digs.
St. Thomas returns home to Schoenecker Arena Nov. 12 against Western Illinois for its only match of the week.
