Tommie Volleyball makes final road trip of 2022 at South Dakota State and South Dakota

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Volleyball makes its final road trip of the 2022 season Nov. 3 and 5 as it faces South Dakota State and South Dakota. The Tommies open the weekend at 7 p.m. Thursday in Brookings, S.D., prior to the road finale at 4:45 p.m. Saturday in Vermillion, S.D.
 
Tommie Watch
St. Thomas earned first-set wins Oct. 27 against Omaha and Oct. 29 against Denver before eventually falling 3-1 in both at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies began the week with a loss of 25-19, 12-25, 12-25, 21-25 to the Mavericks followed by a loss of 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 12-25 to the Pioneers.
 
The Tommies have now won three of the past four first sets while seven of their 19 set wins have come in the opening game.
 
Sophomore Lauren Galvin recorded back-to-back double-doubles over the weekend, totaling 12 kills and 11 digs against the Mavericks and 11 kills and 14 digs against the Pioneers. She now has a team-high six double-doubles this season, followed by freshman Allie Kopp with five and sophomore Eva Fitzgerald with three.
 
Kopp led the Tommies in assists over both matches with 21 against Omaha and 19 against Denver. She added eight digs in each match, finishing just shy of her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season.
 
Graduate student Carrie Rutledge led the team with 41 digs, averaging 5.13 per set, and also led with three service aces. Freshman Emma Goerger paced the squad with five total blocks.
 
Entering Thursday, the Tommies lead the Summit League with 1.71 opponent blocks per set and rank seventh with 1.28 service aces per set. Rutledge ranks sixth in the league with 3.84 digs per set. Galvin ranks ninth with 3.16 kills per set and Goerger ranks tied for eighth with 0.97 blocks per set.
 
Milestone Tracker
Galvin topped 600 career kills Saturday versus Denver and is three digs shy of 400.
 
Kopp is approaching 400 assists on the season as a freshman, entering the week with a team-high 390.
 
Rutledge surpassed 600 career digs Thursday versus Omaha and has a team-high 280 this season.
 
Series History
The Tommies are 0-3 against the Jackrabbits after falling in the first game of the 2022 series, 3-1. St. Thomas is 0-2 at home and 0-1 on the road against SDSU.
 
The Tommies are 0-3 against South Dakota all-time, dropping a 3-1 match Oct. 6. This will be the first match played between the Tommies and Coyotes in Vermillion, S.D.
 
Scouting South Dakota State
South Dakota State is 11-13 overall and 5-7 in the Summit League after snapping a five-match losing streak Nov. 1 against North Dakota State. The Jackrabbits took a 3-1 loss (25-18, 30-32, 17-25, 21-25) to the Coyotes before snapping their skid with a 3-1 decision (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23) over the Bison.
 
The Jackrabbits are hitting .211 with 12.60 kills and 11.56 assists per set. SDSU is third in the Summit League with 1.48 service aces per set and fourth with 15.62 digs per set and in hitting percentage. Fifth year Crystal Burk is 21st in the nation and second in the conference with 4.29 kills per set. Sophomore Raegen Reilly is fourth in the Summit League with 9.70 assists per set.
 
Scouting South Dakota
South Dakota is 22-2 overall and leads the Summit League with an 11-1 record. The Coyotes' nine-match winning continued with wins of 3-1 over South Dakota State (18-25, 32-30, 25-17, 25-21) and 3-2 over North Dakota (24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 15-8).
 
The Coyotes are hitting .249 with 13.07 kills and 12.17 assists per set. USD is second in the Summit League with 2.48 blocks per set and with a .178 opposing hitting percentage. Junior Elizabeth Juhnke leads the country with 5.43 kills per set. Fifth year Lolo Weideman is 36th in the nation and leads the conference with 4.76 digs per set.
