Tommie Volleyball wraps up 2022 season against Kansas City, Oral Roberts

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Volleyball wraps up its 2022 season Nov. 17 and 19 with matches against Kansas City and Oral Roberts at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies and Roos open the week Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by Parents/Senior Day against the Golden Eagles Saturday at 12 p.m.
Tommie Watch
St. Thomas took a season sweep over Western Illinois following a 3-0 win Saturday, Nov. 12 at Schoenecker Arena. The Tommies beat the Leathernecks 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 to improve to 4-24 overall and 2-14 in the Summit League.
With the win over WIU, St. Thomas surpassed its 2021 win total.
St. Thomas and Western Illinois traded points over the first six serves until the Purple went on a 7-0 run to pull ahead, 9-3. The Tommies took a set-high seven-point lead, 12-5, before the Leathernecks came back to within one, 21-20. A kill from sophomore Lauren Galvin helped St. Thomas score four of the final six points to win the set.
Galvin opened the second set with a service ace as the Tommies went on for a quick 3-1 lead. After WIU tied the game at 3-3, St. Thomas began to pull away but saw a short Western Illinois run tie the set, 10-10. The Tommies followed with a 10-3 run, including two kills and two blocks from freshman Emma Goerger, to set up the set two win.
The final set also started with both squads trading scores over the first five points. A bad set later allowed the Leathernecks to take a 7-6 lead, its final of the match. Three straight WIU attack errors set up a 7-0 St. Thomas run while the Tommies later ended the match with five of the final seven points.
Freshman Tezra Rudzitis led the Tommies with 10 kills and added six digs, three blocks and one ace. Goerger totaled eight kills and a team-high four blocks while Galvin finished with seven kills and 14 digs.
Entering Thursday, the Tommies lead the Summit League with 1.73 opponent blocks per set and rank seventh with 1.27 service aces per set. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge ranks fourth in the Summit League with 3.94 digs per set, freshman Emma Goerger ranks ninth with 0.99 blocks per set, and Galvin ranks ninth with 3.16 kills per set.

Sophomore Eva Fitzgerald is 76 assists shy of 500 in her career.
Galvin topped 600 career kills Saturday, Oct. 29 versus Denver and topped 400 career digs Thursday, Nov. 3 at South Dakota State.
Goerger is currently at 95 career blocks in her freshman season. She leads the team in total blocks by 34.
Kopp surpassed 400 career assists Saturday, Nov. 5 at South Dakota and has a team-high 427 in her first season.
Rutledge surpassed 600 career digs Thursday versus Omaha and has a team-high 311 this season, which also sets a single-season-high.
Saying Goodbye
Graduate student Carrie Rutledge will play her final match of the season Saturday during Parents'/Senior Day against Oral Roberts.
Entering Thursday, Rutledge has played in 189 sets and 56 matches through her three seasons with the Tommies. She was a 2020-21 Academic All-MIAC selection and recorded back-to-back 300+ dig seasons. Rutledge has also totaled 106 career assists, 55 kills and 32 service aces.

Kansas City is 8-21 overall and 5-11 in the Summit League after falling in back-to-back matches against South Dakota and South Dakota State. The Roos opened the home weekend with a 3-0 loss, 13-25, 18-25, 14-25, to the Coyotes before a 3-2 loss, 14-25, 15-25, 26-24, 28-26, 8-15, to the Jackrabbits.
The Roos are hitting .189 with 12.27 kills and 11.42 assists per set. UMKC is 63rd in the nation and fifth in the conference with 15.64 digs per set. Senior Kennedy Schritenthal is third in the Summit League with 4.22 digs per set.
Scouting Oral Roberts
Oral Roberts is 7-21 overall and 4-12 in the Summit League after falling in two matches of a seven-match losing streak. The Golden Eagles first fell to the Jackrabbits, 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 14-25) in Tulsa, Okla., before a 3-1 loss (25-23, 17-25, 12-25, 19-25) to the Coyotes to wrap up the home weekend.
The Golden Eagles are hitting .160 with 11.71 kills and 10.74 assists per set. ORU is 51st in the nation and third in the conference with 15.86 digs per set. Senior Sakira LaCour is fourth in the Summit League with 1.13 blocks per set.
