10/6/2022 4:49:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. - St. Thomas Men's Hockey is home to play a Friday-Saturday non-conference series against Alaska-Fairbanks at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. Puck drop is 7:07 p.m. on Friday and 6:07 p.m. on Saturday.
The Toms showed encouraging signs but lost 3-1 Saturday (home) and 4-0 Sunday (away) in a season-opening series Oct. 1-2 against No. 10-ranked St. Cloud State.
On Saturday, the Huskies scored three goals in a 7:18 span of period one to take a 3-0 lead. The Toms scored late in period two as freshman Carson Peters connected on his first collegiate goal.
Freshman Aaron Trotter stopped 20 shots in net on Saturday and helped kill off the final four SCSU power plays. Freshman Ethan Roberts had 34 saves on Sunday.
SCSU's D-I experience showed against a younger Tommie team: St. Cloud State's roster includes 12 players who are either seniors, fifth-years or grad students. The Huskies also have four juniors on a 27-player roster.

Last Time
Alaska Fairbanks swept last year's home series with the Purple, 6-1 and 7-2. The Tommies have a 5-5 all-time record against Fairbanks. St. Thomas' last road trip to Alaska in any sport prior to last February came 33 seasons earlier in the D-III era, in 1988-89, when it went 0-4 combined in games at Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks. Tommie coach Rico Blasi made multiple trips to Alaska-Fairbanks as a player and coach over nearly 30 seasons while at Miami (Ohio).
Opponent Watch
The Nanooks went 13-6-2 over their final 21 games last season after a 1-12 start. Fairbanks' 2022-23 roster includes four seniors or grad students plus 16 juniors and sophs. The 30-man roster consists of four incoming freshman and four transfer players (four of which from the lower 48 and the other four coming from Canada).
The Nanooks (14-18-2 last season) went 1-0-1 on home ice last weekend against American International College with goals scored by Simon Falk, Jonny Sorenson, and Colin Doyle. They traveled midweek and jetted over 3,000 miles on an 8 1-2-hour plane trip.
