Dig Pink, 2012 Championship Team recognition part of busy Tommie Volleyball weekend

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Volleyball welcomes in Omaha Oct. 27 and Denver Oct. 29 as part of an event filled weekend. The Tommies will host Dig Pink and Club Volleyball Night at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Mavericks before recognizing St. Thomas' 2012 National Championship team at 11 a.m. Saturday against the Pioneers at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul.
St. Thomas will be collecting donations throughout Thursday's Dig Pink night, which will directly benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Prior to Saturday's match, St. Thomas will recognize the 2012 National Championship team during its 10-year anniversary. The team will also be recognized during halftime of the Tommie Football game. The team finished the season 40-1 and overcame a 2-0 deficit in the national championship match to win in five sets, marking the first national title in program history. The Tommie squad featured two All-Americans, six all-conference selections and MIAC Player of the Year Kelly Foley while Head Coach Thanh Pham was named the MIAC Coach of the Year.

St. Thomas dropped matches at North Dakota and North Dakota State to wrap up a four-match road trip Oct. 20 and 22. The Tommies began the weekend with a 3-1 loss (25-22, 21-25, 24-25, 23-25) to the Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks, N.D., before a 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 21-25) loss to the Bison in Fargo, N.D.
The Tommies extended its set winning streak to four after taking the opening game against the Fighting Hawks, 25-22. Facing a 22-20 deficit, St. Thomas scored the final five points to win set one. Only twice through the four-set match did the score reach more than three points.
Sophomores Eva Fitzgerald and Lauren Galvin each recorded double-doubles against North Dakota. Fitzgerald tallied 12 digs and 11 assists for her third double-double while Galvin totaled a team-high 15 kills with 10 digs for her fourth double-double.
Galvin totaled a team-best 24 kills over the weekend, hitting .224 and adding 15 digs, two blocks, two assists and one service ace. Fitzgerald and freshman Allie Kopp paced the team with 20 assists while graduate student Carrie Rutledge led with 22 digs. Freshman Emma Goerger tallied nine blocks, including two solo.
Entering Thursday, the Tommies lead the Summit League with 1.68 opponent blocks per set and rank seventh with 1.85 blocks per set and 1.30 service aces per set. Rutledge ranks fifth in the league with 3.68 digs per set, Goerger ranks seventh with 1.00 blocks per set and Galvin ranks ninth with 3.19 kills per set.
Milestone Tracker
Fitzgerald topped 400 career assists Saturday against North Dakota State and she is six digs shy of 250 in her career.
Galvin is 17 kills away from reaching 600 and 28 digs shy of 400 in her career.
Rutledge is nine digs shy of 600 in her career. She reached the 500 mark Oct. 6 against South Dakota.
With 20 assists over the weekend, Kopp has a team-best 350 assists during her freshman season. She is two digs away from 150.

The Tommies are 0-3 all-time against Omaha, falling in straight sets Oct. 1 during the first meeting of 2022.

Scouting Omaha
Omaha is 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the Summit League after a weekend split Oct. 20 versus South Dakota State and Oct. 22 against South Dakota. The Mavericks began the weekend with a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) over the Jackrabbits before a 1-3 loss (22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25) to the Coyotes in Omaha, Neb. The loss to USD snapped an eight-match winning streak for UNO, losing just two sets during the streak.
The Mavericks are hitting .225 with 14.04 kills and 13.18 assists per set. UNO is 13th in the country in assists per set and 16th in kills per set, and leads the Summit League in both. Junior McKenna Ruch ranks 15th in the nation with 1.42 blocks per set and is eighth with 114 total blocks.
Scouting Denver
Denver is 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the Summit League after a split against South Dakota Oct 20 and South Dakota State Oct. 22. The Pioneers dropped the weekend-opener to the Coyotes in five sets (25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 12-15) before picking up a straight-set win (29-27, 25-16, 27-25) over the Jackrabbits in Denver, Colo.
The Pioneers are hitting .202 with 12.79 kills and 11.91 assists per set. UD is fourth in the nation and leads the Summit League with 2.85 blocks per set and also lead the league with 1.70 service aces per set and an opposing hitting percentage of .160. Senior Brianna Green is 10th in the country and leads the Summit League with 1.49 blocks per set.
