St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Volleyball opened Thursday night's Dig Pink with a set one win before falling to Omaha, 3-1, in front of a crowd of 280 at Schoenecker Arena. Sophomore Lauren Galvin notched her fifth double-double of the season as the Tommies fall to 3-21 overall and 1-11 in the Summit League.
The Mavericks (14-8, 9-3 Summit) struck first in set one followed quickly by four of the next five points scored by the Tommies to take a 4-2 lead. Junior Ellie Dammann put up the first of back-to-back kills to force a timeout and exiting the break with a 10-5 advantage. While Omaha pulled to within one point, St. Thomas held on with seven of the final nine points, including two kills from Galvin and freshman Emma Goerger, to secure the set one win.
After falling in set two, the Tommies scored three straight points early in set three to grab a 3-1 lead. The Mavericks followed with 10 of the next 12 points to take control and pull away with a 2-1 match lead.
Dammann tacked on the first St. Thomas point of set four, starting a 2-0 run to tie the set. The Mavericks pulled ahead by as many as seven points before a 4-1 run brought the deficit to four, 20-16. Kills from junior Claire Ricard, sophomore Libby Mattila and freshman Tezra Rudzitis cut the deficit even further to one, 22-21, before the Mavericks closed the match with three straight points.
Galvin led the Tommies with 12 kills on a .214 hitting percentage to go along with 11 digs, three assists and one service ace. Freshman Allie Kopp provided a team-high 21 assists and eight digs while graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the squad with 20 digs.
St. Thomas stays at home Saturday, Oct. 29 to host Denver at 11 a.m. The Tommies will honor the 2012 St. Thomas Volleyball National Championship team prior to first serve.
