St. Paul, Minn. -- Sophomore Lauren Galvin recorded her sixth double-double of the season and second in a row as St. Thomas Volleyball fell in its home weekend finale to Denver, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 12-25).
Sophomore Lauren Galvin and freshman Tezra Rudzitis each accounted three kills early in set one to even the game, 8-8. Both teams traded leads three times, the final time on a kill by freshman Emma Goerger to hold the lead for the Tommies. St. Thomas led by as many as four points late while Rudzitis recorded the final point to hold off a Denver comeback attempt.
Set two began with three lead changes until a 10-2 run for the Tommies gave them a 17-9 advantage. Denver scored on four of the next five points to gain momentum and complete a comeback to tie the match.
After Denver jumped out to a 7-1 lead in set three, St. Thomas closed the margin and took a 14-13 lead on a kill by Goerger. The Pioneers followed with four straight and six of the next eight points to regain the lead for the remainder of the set.
The Pioneers again took a quick lead in the final set, 9-1, before a kill from Goerger and a service ace from sophomore Payton Willman stopped the set-opening run. Denver then went on a six-point unanswered run on its way to the match win.
Galvin and Rudzitis led the team with 11 kills each while Galvin added 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season and second consecutive. Graduate student Carrie Rutledge paced the squad with 21 digs while freshman Allie Kopp led with 19 assists. Goerger finished with four blocks while junior Claire Ricard added three.
St. Thomas makes its final road trip of the season Nov. 3 and 5 as it takes on South Dakota State and South Dakota, respectively.
