Tommies nab first Summit win with sweep over Leathernecks

Macomb, Ill. -- An efficient offensive attack led St. Thomas Volleyball to its first Summit League win of the season Saturday, a straight-set victory over Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. Freshman Tezra Rudzitis tied for the team lead in kills and notched her first career double-double as the Tommies took down the Leathernecks, 25-20, 25-21, 25-13.
St. Thomas improved to 3-18 overall and 1-8 in the Summit League behind a season-high .324 hitting percentage. Western Illinois, which falls to 4-17 overall and 0-9 in the Summit League, was held to .147 hitting for the third-lowest percentage allowed by St. Thomas this season.
Junior Ellie Dammann made her return to the lineup Saturday and recorded a kill from freshman Allie Kopp for the first point of the match. The Tommies held the lead or tied until the Leathernecks went on an 8-2 run for a 19-16 advantage. Freshman Emma Goerger recorded a solo block to begin a set-ending run of 8-1 for the Purple and a 1-0 lead in the match.
After a set-opening point by WIU, a kill from junior Claire Ricard started a 6-0 run to force a timeout by the Leathernecks. The Tommies extended the lead to six, 10-4, when WIU answered with 10 of the next 13 points. Goerger and sophomore Lauren Galvin combined for a block to give the lead back to St. Thomas, 17-16, and held off Western Illinois with four straight points to end the set.
Galvin began the third set with her 10th kill of the match to start a 3-1 Tommie run. After a 4-0 run for the first WIU lead of the set, St. Thomas held Western Illinois without back-to-back points for the rest of the match. Rudzitis tallied four kills during a 7-0 run by the Tommies to close out the win.
Rudzitis and Galvin paced the squad with 15 kills each while Rudzitis also set a career-high with 12 digs. Dammann and Goerger totaled seven kills each and hit .500 and .385, respectively. Goerger led with four total blocks while graduate student Carrie Rutledge led with 17 digs.
St. Thomas begins its second time facing Summit League opponents Oct. 20 and 22 at North Dakota and North Dakota State, respectively.
