Grand Forks, N.D. -- The sophomore duo of Eva Fitzgerald and Lauren Galvin each notched double-doubles Thursday night as St. Thomas Volleyball fell in a tight match to North Dakota, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 24-26, 23-25).

Only twice through the four-set match did the score between St. Thomas (3-19, 1-9 Summit) and North Dakota (9-11, 6-3 Summit) reach more than three points. The Fighting Hawks led by four to win set two and 7-1 early in the third set, before the Tommies came back to take a lead.

St. Thomas held the first lead of the night, extending it to 3-1 on a kill from junior Ellie Dammann. The Tommies extended the lead to three three times before the Fighting Hawks scored four straight points. The run gave UND its first lead of the night while both teams traded leads four times late. Facing a 22-20 deficit, a solo block from freshman Emma Goerger gave St. Thomas a 23-22 lead and was part of five straight points to secure the set one comeback.

Set two featured 11 ties to start the game, including a kill from Dammann to tie the set, 14-14. The Fighting Hawks scored four of the next five points before Goerger sparked a 5-2 run to give the Tommies a 21-20 advantage. Like the Purple in the first set, UND closed out the second with five straight points to tie the match, 1-1.

The Tommies faced a 7-1 deficit to begin the third set before Goerger's seventh kill of the match started a quick 4-0 run. St. Thomas later went on a 6-2 run to tie the match, 15-15, and force a UND timeout. Freshman Tezra Rudzitis recorded her fifth kill of the set out of the timeout to give the Tommies its first and only lead. UND regained the lead and held a 24-21 advantage before three straight points from St. Thomas to force extra points. The Fighting Hawks took a 2-1 lead following back-to-back points in the third set.

Kills from Rudzitis, junior Claire Ricard and Goerger helped St. Thomas to a 3-1 lead to start the final set. Both teams went on runs to trade leads before trading points on eight consecutive serves. UND rattled off four straight points on a block, two kills and an ace to grab its second lead of the set, 14-13. The Tommies and Fighting Hawks again traded lead until North Dakota scored four of the final six points for the match win.

Fitzgerald recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 digs and 11 assists. She was one of three Tommies with double-digit assists, led by freshman Keya Luta Win Hunt with 14. Galvin tallied her fourth double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills and 10 digs. Goerger followed with 11 kills and led with six blocks, while graduate student Carrie Rutledge led the team with 17 digs.

St. Thomas wraps up its weekend in the state of North Dakota Saturday as it takes on North Dakota State at 1 p.m. in Fargo, N.D.
