Dobchuk finishes with 47 saves in 3-1 loss to No. 4 Wisconsin
1/31/2022 9:52:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. - St. Thomas women's hockey (4-20-1, 2-18-1 WCHA) battled against the fourth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (20-3-4, 15-3-3 WCHA) to a 3-1 final score on Monday night. The Tommies trailed by just one late in the contest before the Badgers scored on an empty-net situation.
The Tommies pitched a shutout against the nationally-ranked Badgers over the first 20 minutes, entering the second period at 0-0. Wisconsin amassed 17 shots in the opening period as senior goaltender Alexa Dobchuk was perfect at stopping pucks flying her way. In addition to Dobchuk's 17 first period saves, the Tommies totaled nine blocked shots, eight more than the opposition.
After a Wisconsin goal started off the scoring in the game, junior forward Luci Bianchi scored her fifth goal of the season, after taking the puck down the ice on an assist from senior forward Anna Solheim. The Badgers would retake the lead just minutes later, giving the opposition a 2-1 advantage. The Tommies were limited to just two shots in the second period, one of which resulted in a goal for the team.
A late goal scored in an empty net notwithstanding, the Tommies kept it close with the Badgers for most of the game. The Wisconsin defense stymied St. Thomas in the third period, holding the home team to just one shot on goal over the final 20 minutes.
Dobchuk, who played over 58 minutes, notched 47 saves against the Badgers. Dobchuk's reached the 40-save plateau for the sixth time in her St. Thomas career. She stopped the lone Wisconsin power-play that she faced.
