St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas men's basketball (8-10, 2-4 Summit League) could not withstand a late surge from South Dakota (11-7, 4-3 Summit League) in a 90-79 loss.
St. Thomas played close with South Dakota for most of the contest, echoing the sentiments of a majority of the team's games this season. Late free throws allowed the opposition to bolster its lead in a tight game.
The Tommies jumped out to an early 9-7 lead in the first half, after receiving five points from graduate guard Burt Hedstrom and four points from senior guard Anders Nelson. A layup from senior Riley Miller at the 8:11 mark extended the St. Thomas lead to four points, 23-18. The Coyotes would heat up from beyond the three-point line, giving the opposition a 37-29 lead. Miller and the Tommies put together a resilient effort to tie the game at half, with a Ryan Lindberg corner trey evening up the contest.
At the half, St. Thomas shot 53.3 percent from the field and 46.2 percent on threes. At the charity stripe, the Purple were 5-6 on their attempts. Continuing their season-long trend of protecting the ball, the Tommies totaled just one turnover in the first 20 minutes. Miller (16) and Hedstrom (10) combined for 26 of the team's 43 points at halftime.
The two teams traded runs in the early portion of the second half, before the Coyotes put together an extended scoring streak in the latter portion of the half. Anders and Nelson hit on back-to-back three-pointers to allow the Tommies to take a five-point lead, 52-47, at the 17:49 mark. A Lindberg three on an assist from Brooks Allen with just over four minutes left cut the South Dakota lead to four, 73-69. The Tommies would be unable to rally back over the final few minutes.
The Tommies struggled shooting the ball in the second half, posting outputs of 36.7 percent from the field and 30.8 percent on three-pointers. The team was highly successful at the charity stripe with 10 of 11 attempts successfully falling in. Uncharacteristically, St. Thomas turned the ball over eight times in the final 20 minutes.
The Purple will return to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 25 for a rescheduled game at North Dakota State. The road contest is set to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
