Women's Hockey hangs close before Minnesota State pulls away late in 4-1 loss

1/21/2022 9:33:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Mendota Heights, Minn. - St. Thomas women's hockey (4-16-1, 2-14-1 WCHA) hung close with Minnesota State (11-11-1, 8-11-1 WCHA) before the Mavs pulled away late in the third period, in a 4-1 effort, on Friday.

The Tommies were outshot by the Mavericks, 14-6, in the opening period of play. Penalties committed by the opposition granted St. Thomas two power-play opportunities, in which the team got one shot up on the Minnesota State goaltender. The Purple amassed six blocked shots in the first period, led by freshmen Maddy Clough and Alli Pahl. Six different Tommies recorded a shot on goal attempt in the first 20 minutes.

Down, 1-0, entering the second period, junior Emma Larson found the net on assists from senior Anna Solheim and junior Allie Monrean at the 18:16 mark. The Mavs would score under a minute later to retake the lead, 2-1. All eight of the Toms' shots in the second period were on goal, and the team totaled seven faceoff wins.

The Tommies faced a stout defensive effort from the Mavs in the third period. The team was limited to two shots, as the opposing team added two more goals, one of which was of the empty net variety.

Senior Alexa Dobchuk got the start in the net for St. Thomas, making 42 saves in almost 59 minutes of action. Dobchuk, a goaltender from Eden Prairie, Minn., faced a match-high 19 shots in the second period and made 18 successful saves. She has five games this season with 42 or more saves.

"It is tough when the score doesn't reflect how hard we played," said assistant coach Bethany Brausen. "If we can keep the same enthusiasm come Sunday, then it should be a competitive matchup that we feel good about.

"We are looking forward to the outdoor contest on Sunday, the team is so fired up. They have a level of appreciation for going out there and playing outside, especially with how we played tonight, to have to chance to reset and do it all again."
