Women's Hockey falls in Hockey Day Minnesota contest, 3-1
1/23/2022 3:57:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mankato, Minn. - St. Thomas women's hockey (4-17-1, 2-15-1 WCHA) lost, 3-1, at Minnesota State (12-11-1, 8-11-1 WCHA) in a Hockey Day Minnesota showdown.
Competing in their first Hockey Day Minnesota game as a Division I program, the Tommies held tough at Minnesota State, but could not find a late-score for a comeback rally. After tying the score late in the first period, 1-1, the opposition would tack on a goal in both the second and third periods.
Minnesota State started off the scoring with a first period netter with 9:50 remaining in the first 20 minutes. With 28 seconds left in the period, on a power-play opportunity, senior Anna Erickson found the net off a rebound, with assists from freshman Maddy Clough and junior Allie Monrean. Erickson's goal tied up the contest, 1-1. In the opening period, St. Thomas amassed nine shots on goal, finishing with just one less than Minnesota State.
The two teams played a quick and concise second period, before the Mavericks found the net again with a goal at the 18:56 mark. Both squads were limited shot-wise in the period, as the Tommies recorded just five shots on goal, and the Mavs finished with seven. Junior forward Allie Monrean led the team over the initial 40 minutes with her three shots on goal.
Both teams were held scoreless for a majority of the third period, until a two-minute span at the conclusion of the contest that saw the Tommies pull their goalie, and the Mavs capitalize on it with an empty-net goal.
Senior goaltender Alexa Dobchuk, starting in the net, made 32 saves and faced 34 shots against Minnesota State. Dobchuk faced one power-play in the game, which was successfully halted by the Eden Prairie, Minn. native.
