The first Division I athletic event played indoors on campus at the University of St. Thomas didn't disappoint.
Tommie Volleyball needed five sets in Thursday night's two-hour, 20-minute match at Schoenecker Arena, but it pulled out a 3-2 victory over the University of North Dakota. The Toms outlasted UND 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 15-7.
A loud and spirited crowd of 592 at Schoenecker Arena watched as the Toms (2-11 overall, 1-2 Summit) ended a nine-match season losing streak. Coach Thanh Pham said he was proud of the way his team persevered and was able to take control of the pivotal fifth set.
"I really liked our fight," Pham said. "We (won) that one point (late in the third set) that went on for five minutes it seemed like, and we never gave up. It took everybody, not just the starters, but all of our kids were engaged in what was happening, and I really liked the unity our team showed.
"The fans were amazing tonight and did a great job of cheering and really giving us that extra boost. You could feel the energy in the gym, and that helped propel us to the win."
The No. 13 was a lucky one for the Tommies as they were playing their 13th match of the season but first on campus, and No. 13 Selena Levendoski played a huge role. The junior from Clear Lake, Wis., had 20 kills and five blocks and helped the Purple hit a season-best .244.
Lauren Galvin chipped in 20 kills and 14 digs, Grace Anetipa had 61 assists and four blocks; Carrie Rutledge added 23 digs, Claire Ricard had nine kills and .Libby Mattila had nine kills and 12 digs.
Lexi Ahrens had 15 kills and three aces to lead the Fighting Hawks (1-14, 0-4), who have dropped three five-set decisions this season.
St. Thomas has two more conference matches at home in the next week -- Saturday against North Dakota State (3 p.m.), and next Tuesday night against Western Illinois.
