Schmidt’s 16.5 points leads Tommie Volleyball to win over Hurricanes

St. Thomas swept Miami (FL) for program’s third Power 4 win over past three season
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of St. Thomas volleyball team notched its third win over a Power 4 opponent in as many seasons Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) over the University of Miami (FL) in Schoenecker Arena. Sophomore Anya Schmidt topped 500 career points as she led the team with 16.5 points and 13 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Thomas closed the first set by scoring five straight points to overturn a 23-20 Miami (FL) lead and win 25-23. Gustafson served the final four points, with Kocon putting St. Thomas ahead on a kill from Taylor McNear before Kurth and Schmidt combined on the block that finished the set.
St. Thomas broke open the second set with a 6-0 run, moving from 11-9 to 17-9 behind a Schmidt kill and service ace plus kills from Kealy, Gustafson and Addie Schmotzer. After Miami (FL) scored three straight to reach 22-16, St. Thomas closed the set with kills from Schmidt around a Kocon ace for a 25-17 finish.
St. Thomas created the key separation in the third set by moving from an 18-16 edge to a 22-16 advantage, getting kills from Schmotzer and Gustafson, a Bryn Lunski service ace, and a Miami (FL) attack error. Earlier, Gustafson opened the set with back-to-back service aces, and Kira Brundage added another ace as St. Thomas started ahead 4-1. Miami (FL) scored twice after St. Thomas reached 24-17, but Kocon closed the set with a kill from McNear for a 25-19 win.
