Volleyball splits two Friday tourney matches in Texas

Freshman Lauren Galvin contributed a match-best 17 kills and also had 13 digs and three aces to lead St. Thomas Volleyball to a five-set victory over the host Cardinals at the University of Incarnate Word tournament Friday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas. The Toms won 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 13-25, 15-10.

It was the first Division I victory for the Tommies (1-2). They are also competing in a 3 p.m. Friday match against Eastern Washington University, and will play again here on Saturday against Idaho State to close the tournament.

Tommie coach Thanh Pham used 14 players in the victory, including eight freshmen and three sophomores.

The Purple won 25-22 and 25-23 in the second and third sets but played flat in the fourth set to see the match score tied at 2-2. The Toms broke to a 4-0 lead in the deciding fifth set and showed poise at key moments. Freshman Libby Mattila executed two kills at the end to help close out the win. Mattila hit .333 with seven kills overall

Senior Grace Anetipa closed with 24 assists and 11 digs; freshman Payton Willman had 25 digs; freshman Lander Friederichs added nine kills and four blocks and hit .646; freshman Eva Fitzgerald added 20 assists; senior Carrie Rutledge added 12 digs; and sophomore Ellie Dammann had seven kills and four blocks.

Eastern Washington 3, St. Thomas 1

Lauren Galvin had 16 kills and 11 digs but Eastern Washington (2-2) won the third and fourth sets to claim a 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19 victory in non-conference play at the Incarnate Word Tournament.

Libby Matilla had 12 kills, Payton Willman recorded 22 digs, and Grace Anetipa chipped in 16 digs and 15 assists.
