In the second game of a back-to-back series against No. 3-ranked Ohio State, the St. Thomas women's hockey team scored its first goal of the Division I era off of the stick of freshman forward Abby Promersberger in a 4-1 loss.
"I'm very proud of how we finished the weekend," said Head Coach Joel Johnson. "We played well defensively and got incredible goaltending again from Alexa Dobchuk. It was such a joy to be on the bench when Abby scored — there was such authentic enthusiasm and pure elation. I thought Ohio State made some good adjustments and found ways to create offense, and at the same time I was very impressed with how we responded. We were better today than yesterday, and we are excited to keep improving as we prepare for next weekend."
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period of play on Saturday.
The Tommies managed to pull themselves within a goal, trailing 2-1 early in the second period with Promersberger's goal, her first of the season and first of her collegiate career. Assisting on the goal were Megan Cornell and Anna Solheim. Unfortunately, the Tommies were unable to close the gap as the Buckeyes added two of their own goals in the second period.
Dobchuk had another strong outing in net for the Tommies; she registered 48 saves and played all 60 minutes for the second-straight game.
St. Thomas returns to action next weekend as it hosts Bemidji State University at St. Thomas Ice Arena for a back-to-back series with puck drop slated for 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
