Slow start costs Women's Hockey in 3-0 loss

Tommie Women's Hockey battled through all 60 minutes and kept it close against Bemidji State in its home Division I opener on Friday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
But a slow start and Kerigan Dowhy's 31-save shutout let the visitors record a 3-0 win in its season opener.
Alexa Dobchuk had 30 saves for the Tommies (0-3 overall, 0-3 WCHA), who came close on several scoring chances but couldn't break through against Dowhy.
St. Thomas gets another shot on Saturday as it hosts BSU in a 3 p.m. game to close the weekend series.
Paige Beebe scored a pair of first-period goals for BSU, the second one in the final two seconds on the clock before the first break to help BSU gain control.
Tommie coach Joel Johnson said he liked a lot of what St. Thomas showed in the game. But Johnson said the team needs to dig deeper, play loose and generate more scoring chances.
Even though I thought we battled and competed, you have to find a way to put the puck in the net," Johnson said. "It''s a challenge. We have to play better we have to generate chances.
"There are a lot of excuses that are built in for us, going from Division III to Division I and playing in this tough conference. But I don't think it helps us to use any excuses. In the first period, we didn't compete. In the second and third I thought we did. But in the first (period), we could have been better. We talked about that as a group and hopefully (Saturday) we can show that."
