Luci-goosey approach gets Women's Hockey a comeback win

Tommie Women's Hockey had recorded just one goal on the scoreboard over its first 11 periods of Division I hockey. Then at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday at their home Saint Thomas Ice Arena rink, the Purple flipped a switch.

Trailing 1-0 through the first 47:00 on the clock, junior Maija Almich scored the tying goal at 7:06 and junior Luci Bianchi scored the go-ahead goal at 13:06 in a third-period surge that helped produce a 2-1 victory over Bemidji State.

It was St. Thomas' first D-I women's hockey win and first weekend series split. The Tommies (1-3 overall, 1-3 WCHA) avenged a 3-0 loss to BSU here on Friday.

Freshman goalie Saskia Mauer, playing her first college game, denied Bemidji State over the final 58:00 of the contest and closed with 28 saves. The Switzerland native was only cleared to play late Friday afternoon after her admissions transcripts gained final approval.

After giving up a goal in the first 80 seconds, Maurer settled in and made several slick deflections and saves to keep Bemidji off the scoreboard.

"I was really excited for (Saskia)" said Tommie coach Joel Johnson said. "She played great. There were some big saves and in some big spots. And Bemidji got the same goaltending, with big saves in big spots.

"Friday against Bemidji we didn't have a commitment to play the way we were supposed to. Today we just encouraged our players to just play the way (we can). Let's defend well, that has to be our identity, and let's get some good goaltending, and let's get some pucks to the net. We still have work to do in getting pucks to the net and creating more offense. But I think this is a version of the team that we feel like we have to play, much more so than yesterday.

"I just want our players to know they had a special moment today, and they deserve all the credit."

St. Thomas is off next weekend and plays St. Cloud State on Oct. 15.
