Women's Hockey takes exciting home win in WCHA play

10/15/2021 5:47:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Freshman Saskia Maurer stopped 37 of 39 shots and senior transfer Megan Korzack scored the go-ahead goal with 6:03 left to snap a 2-2 as the host Tommies (2-3 overall, 2-3 WCHA) won their second consecutive women's hockey game with Friday afternoon's 3-2 defeat of St. Cloud State (2-3, 0-3) on home ice in Mendota Heights.

The Huskies never led despite outshooting St. Thomas 39-17.

St. Cloud State's Ellie Andersen scored the tying goal with 6:55 remaining, her first collegiate tally. But Korzack answered less than a minute later with her first goal in a St. Thomas uniform in what proved to be the game winner.

The Toms fended off a furious charge by SCSU late as the Huskies pulled their goalie and played the final 2:10 with a player advantage.

The teams put up three goals midway through period one over a 1:44 span. Allie Monrean gave the Toms a 1-0 lead at the 9:26 mark with her first goal of the season. Taylor Lind answered for SCSU for a 1-1 tie 1:28 later at 10:54, but freshman Lauren Stenslie connected on her first college goal at 11:10.

Coach Joel Johnson's Tommies scored just one goal in the first 11 periods this season against Ohio State and Bemidji State. But the Purple scored two in the final frame to rally past Bemidji 13 days ago, winning 2-1, and came back with three goals Friday as the team has started to find its game in season one of Division I hockey.

Maurer moved to 2-0 in her two career games with just three goals allowed. She said she tries to play the same even if there's late-game pressure.

"I like being in that spot if I can help my team," Maurer said. "I trust my teammates, I know they will help me and do their jobs."

The teams play again Saturday in St. Cloud at 1 p.m.
