A new chapter in University of Thomas athletics has begun. Tommie Women's Soccer took the honor of ushering in Division I play with Tuesday's home-field contest against Northern Iowa.
With a stadium record crowd of 405 watching, the visiting Panthers (1-1-1) and the host Tommies (0-0-1) played to a scoreless tie. The non-conference clash was contested on a warm Tuesday evening at St. Thomas' South Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Graupmann led a solid Tommie team effort with nine saves as she played all 110 minutes in net.
Northern Iowa finished with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Both teams attacked in spurts but neither team could convert on potential scoring opportunities in the back-and-forth battle.
The contest marked the first Division I competition in any sport for the Tommies, who will compete in 21 sports in four different conferences starting with the fall season.
St. Thomas coach Sheila McGill said her squad has competed well and played together so far in three exhibition contests and one official game. The Toms will look to continue their progress on a three-game span of road games over eight days starting next Sunday afternoon at Chicago State.
Team Notes
St. Thomas extended the program's unbeaten streak to 28 games (22-0-6) dating back to midseason 2019.
McGill used one keeper and 20 different field players over the 110-minute battle.
The Purple are 10-0-2 in home openers since 2010.
