Tommie Athletics is excited to announce Katie Hanneman has been named its first Division I head women's golf coach.

Hanneman brings to St. Thomas 20 years of experience in coaching and golf instruction, including eight years as a Division I head coach. Hanneman previously served as head coach at the University of Minnesota (2002-2007) and East Tennessee State (2000-2002).

"Katie has proven to be a values-based leader with an incredible golf IQ, and a love and passion for the game that is infectious.," said Phil Esten, St. Thomas Vice President, Director of Athletics. "Even more, her commitment to developing our student-athletes off the course as much as on the course directly aligns with our vision at St. Thomas.  I am excited to welcome Coach Hanneman and her family to the Tommie community, and I look forward to celebrating many successes with them."

Hanneman competed as a Division I golfer for four seasons at the University of South Carolina and played in one NCAA Championship meet with the Gamecocks. She also played as an amateur in the 1996 LPGA Edina Realty Classic; later competed on the Futures Tour and Players West Tour; and attended LPGA Qualifying School.

Hanneman is currently owner, director and lead instructor of The MN Golf Lab in the Twin Cities. She also created the Hanneman Golf Academy in 2016 to coach and develop junior golfers in the region.

As a certified trainer with the Positive Coaching Alliance-Minnesota, she leads workshops for training youth sports coaches and parents on their role in developing not just the athletics side but also teaching sportsmanship and citizenship.

"I am honored to become the Head Women's Golf Coach at the University of St. Thomas," Hanneman said. "The excellent educational opportunities offered, along with the student-athlete experience will create an exceptional environment both on and off the golf course. I am excited to be a part of the mission, values and faith-filled atmosphere that St. Thomas embodies. To be a part of this historic time for the entire University while making the transition from Division III to Division I is amazing. I would like to thank Phil Esten, Cory Chapman as well as the entire search committee for their belief in me as well as my vision for this program."

St. Thomas starts play this fall in NCAA Division I in the Summit League, which has nine teams competing in women's golf. The Tommie women will play in a few fall tournaments with the bulk of their first Division I season contested in spring 2022.
