Men's Hockey kills five power plays in 5-1 loss to Penn State
11/23/2021 10:47:00 PM | Men's Hockey
St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas men's ice hockey (1-14, 1-9 CCHA) scored first in a 5-1 loss to Penn State (8-6, 1-5 B1G) on Tuesday.
The Tommies opened up the scoring against the Nittany Lions with a power play goal at the 1:21 mark late in the opening period. Freshman Trevor LeDonne, assisted by defenseman Trevor Zins, found the net on a deflection off of the top of the post. It was LeDonne's first-collegiate goal, and Zins tallied his fifth assist of the season on the netter.
Penn State's offense exploded for three goals in the second period, one of which was on a power play, on 19 total shots. The St. Thomas defense stymied the Nittany Lion's second power play late in the middle period, facing two shots over a two-minute span.
The Nittany Lions would tack on two more goals in the third period. Jacob Berger, making his third start of the season at goalie, stopped a career-best 44 shots and helped kill off five power plays.
"I thought we played well in the first period," said head coach Rico Blasi. "Our penalty killers did a good job. We have to stay away from the undisciplined penalties and not take (penalties) when trying to come back. Tomorrow we need to stay focused on our game for 60 minutes."
"We have to self-assess and hold each other accountable, which is all a part of the process and part of growing as a team and program."
