No. 3-ranked MSU Men's Hockey shows experience in shutout of Toms

11/18/2021 9:27:00 PM | Men's Hockey

MANKATO -- No. 3-ranked Minnesota State Men's Hockey used its experience and speed to cruise to a 9-0 home win over St. Thomas in CCHA play Thursday night before an announced crowd of 3,875 at the Mankato Civic Center.

The Mavericks (10-3 overall, 4-1 CCHA) ran their win streak to four and improved to 6-1 on home ice. An NCAA Frozen Four team last season, MSU showed why its ranked second nationally in per-game scoring as it connected for three goals during a 56-second span late in the first period to take control with a 4-0 lead. Thirteen different MSU players contributed at least one point.

St. Thomas (1-12, 1-8), coming off a 12-day layoff and playing its 11th road game of the season, battled all contest to find offensive chances. Coach Rico Blasi's unit finished with just 13 shots on goal to 38 for the host team.

Adding to the frustration was a play in the final 30 seconds when an apparent Tommie goal scored by Grant Loven was disallowed after video replay due to an offsides violation.

Jacob Berger played the final 40:00 in goal for St. Thomas and stopped 20 of 25 shots, including a short-handed breakaway in the final 7:00.

This was the first men's hockey meeting between these institutions since 1996 when MSU was playing an independent schedule in its first season in Division I hockey.

The teams play Saturday night on the Tommies' home ice in Mendota Heights to close out the first of two CCHA series on the season.
