St. Thomas Men’s Basketball Falls at Fordham after impressive first-half showing

Bronx, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Men's Basketball Team held a 38-37 lead with 58 seconds remaining in the first half before ultimately falling by a score of 84-78.
The Rams held took a 39-38 lead into halftime behind 52 percent shooting effort in the opening half.
The game was tied at 46-46 with 15:53 to play in the game before Fordham went on a 9-0 run to open a 55-46 cushion less than three minutes later, a lead that the Tommies simply couldn't overcome.
In the game, St. Thomas connected on 30-of-69 (43.5%) of its shots from the field, 11-of-37 (29.7%) from behind the arc, and 7-of-15 (46.7%) of its shots from the stripe. However, the Tommies committed only seven turnovers in the game.
Senior G Anders Nelson continued his hot streak, scoring 29 points behind a 13-of-27 (48%) shooting effort from the field. Nelson has scored at least 29 points in each of his last two game (30 points at St. Francis) and is averaging 24 points per contest three games into St. Thomas' Division I journey.
Nelson was one of four Tommies to score double-digit points, joining him were senior F Parker Bjorklund (15), senior G Riley Miller (15), and grad student G Ryan Lindberg (14).
On his postgame radio show on Skor North AM 1500, Coach Johnny Tauer said the Forham sie and defense were a handful.
"Their defense certainly made it tough at times, but I'm really proud of how our guys competed against a team like this," Tauer said. "I thought our guys, while we came up little short, I couldn't be prouder of our effort and how they stay together through thick and thin.
"I want to give a lot of credit to Fordham. Even though our 3-point shooting was uncharacteristically low, I thought their defense was good. We certainly have to shoot better from the free-throw line.
"Kyle Rose for them had a great game. For him to hit six threes, that was huge, I would guess that's a career high for him.
"We're out here in the Bronx playing Fordham, competing against a team that plays in the Atlantic 10. We're getting better every single day. You also try to have some realism (in what we can do). You look at their size, and we can't suddenly grow four inches in height. Some of what they were able to do today (with their size) was get inside and get easy baskets and get to the free-throw line a lot. I think our guys played their hearts out and really battled against a tough team."
The Tommies return to the hardwood Friday when they take on Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio as part of the The YSU/J. Arnold Wealth Management Company Basketball Tournament.
