Youngstown, Ohio – The St. Thomas Men's Basketball team fell 79-75 to the host institution, Youngstown State, in the first of three games the Tommies will play in the YSU/J. Arnold Wealth Management Company Basketball Tournament.

"I think the way they compete is inspiring. I thought we did so many good things in this game," said Head Coach Johnny Tauer on the Skor North post-game show. "It was really, probably a five-minute stretch in the second half where I thought they got to the basket a lot. We're going to struggle when that happens. I think that stretch got them back in the game. It was a slug-fest. Our guys, to be on the road and hit 17 threes, only 10 overs, and have a chance to win, have the ball with a chance to win in the last 10 seconds, very proud of them."

The Tommies took a 36-32 lead into intermission behind a 13-of-35 (40 percent) shooting effort from the field, including eight three point makes on 18 shots from behind the arc. Individually, senior G Anders Nelson led St. Thomas in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 10 points and hauling in four rebounds.

23 seconds into the second half, St. Thomas opened up its largest lead of a closely contest second half, six points, 38-32 with 19:37 to play in the game. Youngstown State responded and opened up a six-point lead of its own, 68-62 with 4:45 to play and again with 2:55 to play.

The Tommies cut it to a two-point game with the Penguins leading 77-75 with just 20 seconds to play on a pair of free throws from senior G Riley Miller. St. Thomas was forced to foul and YSU connected on both of its free throws to walk away with a 79-75 win.

Miller led all scorers with 20 points on the evening. He connected on 6-of-17 shots from the field, including 5-of-11 three-point attempts. Nelson finished with 17 points and five boards.

As a team, the Tommies shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the field, 50 percent (17-of-34) from behind the arc, and made 6-of-7 free throw attempts.

St. Thomas returns to action Saturday in the second-of-three games in the YSU/J. Arnold Wealth Management Company Basketball Tournament against Niagra University. Tipoff is slated for 3:45 p.m. CT.
