Staying disciplined on defense made the Tommies a formidable matchup for conference powerhouse Denver during Friday afternoon's game. The Toms fell 2-1 in a tight battle that showed off the Toms consistency and continual high energy.
Denver is currently tied for first in the Summit League and has won the conference three years in a row. Head Coach Sheila McGill and her squad were determined to give them an equal battle and knew that they needed to come into the game strong on defense and patient on offense. It was evident that the women executed this strategy and proved they can battle with the top conference team.
Tommie defense was cohesive and organized, led by juniors Audrey Vidmar and Tess Phillips. The Purple were consistent with dropping and covering each other, staying tight in the box, and eliminating free runners. Freshman Lissa Mizutani not only excelled as an outside back, but created great opportunities up top, both with an early serve to Abby Brantner, and a powerful shot on goal from outside the box. Sophomore Olivia Graupmann was athletic in the goal, with seven dynamic saves for the Tommies.
The Toms attack knew they had to stay patient and seize opportunities when they came. The Tommie goal came in the 67th minute on a counter-attack effort. Camryn Rintoul served the ball to Lexi Huber, who found the back of the net and tallied her fourth goal this season. Rintoul stepped in as an aggressive and solid attacking player for the Toms today, and her composure up front helped contribute to the first home Summit League goal for the women.
The Tommie attack was aided by several well-established freshmen. The Pioneer defense found themselves making adjustments to counter the speed and combat brought by Abby Brantner. She was aided by Marli Bertagnoli and Huber, who played well off each other and applied great pressure up front. In the midfield, Ellie Tempero continued to be a steady presence. She won many balls out of the air that helped the team secure the second and was consistent playing off the ball.
The Pioneer goals came in the 41st and 67th minutes, giving Denver (7-5) their seventh win of the season.
St. Thomas (2-8-1) finishes their homecoming weekend schedule on Sunday, October 10 at 1 p.m. against the University of Nebraska-Omaha (4-5-2).
