Steady defense stood out for the Tommies against a fast and physical Maverick team on Sunday. Omaha snuck a goal in at the 13th minute, taking the victory in a tough, balanced Summit League game.
There's a first for everything, and for St. Thomas, that includes every contest against a conference opponent this season. Head coach Sheila McGill examines the match with a growth mindset, "The experienced gained while being in the game teaches us the best way to prepare moving forward. Learning what each team can do and how they play is knowledge we use to grow. Our younger players are constantly gaining experience and knowledge, and our returners are the loud voices who help us organize."
UNO (5-5-2) played an incredibly direct, one-touch game that challenged the Toms to learn and adapt as they played. This, with the added obstacle of the wind, presented an opportunity for growth that the Purple threw themselves into, battling to the end. The contest was incredibly physical on both sides, with twenty fouls awarded between the two teams. Much of the game was in the air, requiring players to go up with their head to battle for the ball. Although this is a tough way to try getting settled and organized, the Toms adapted well, and improved on this throughout the match.
Defensive effort and organization kept the Tommies right in with the Mavericks. The defensive unit as a whole was strong for the Toms, playing tough and covering well for each other. The Purple was able to protect the goal for all seven corners faced. They were challenged to win tough balls out of the air and fought hard to clear them from the box. Sophomore Olivia Graupmann was powerful and composed in goal, standing tall in big moments. Junior Audrey Vidmar won outstanding battles and was an aggressive presence on the back line.
St. Thomas (2-9-1) returns home next weekend to play conference opponent Western Illinois (7-5-1) on Sunday, October 17th at 1:00 p.m.
