Women's Soccer secures another conference win over North Dakota

10/30/2021 12:32:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Combat and consistency gave St. Thomas (4-11-1) another conference win during a back-and-forth contest on Friday. They defeated the University of North Dakota (3-12-1) 1-0.

The hard work done by the midfield was crucial in allowing the Tommies to apply the attacking pressure they did, and to protect their back third during the match. They won a lot of physical battles and did a great job of creating opportunities. The Purple also adapted effectively to UND's dynamic play and shut down the Fighting Hawks' attempts to advance. Center mids Ellie Tempero, Sofia Caballero, Lexi Serreyn, Natalie Engel, and Camryn Rintoul rotated well with each other. They helped keep the speed of play and intensity high and were a steady presence all game.

The Toms were able to create a lot of chances throughout the match. During the 11th minute, one of those resulted in the third collegiate goal for freshman Abby Brantner. Fellow freshman Lexi Huber fired a shot that was punched away by North Dakota's goalie. Brantner capitalized on this by collecting the ball and putting it away. This is the second time in three games that these two have connected for a goal and third time this season.

After getting the lead early, the Toms were challenged to maintain composure, and they battled to keep the ball on the ground and in their attacking third. St. Thomas's defense assisted in this effort by staying grounded and playing tough. They were cohesive, tenacious, and kept North Dakota's shots to a minimum. The back line won the ball efficiently, and did an outstanding job connecting with the midfield to keep creating as a team.

Sophomore goalie Olivia Graupmann made six saves for the Tommies to secure a shutout and played the corner kicks well.

St. Thomas finishes their season against conference opponent North Dakota State University (2-12-1). The game is on Sunday, October 31st at 1:00 p.m., and will be a day for celebrating the seniors on the squad: Alex Balfour, Maddy Bomsta, Natalie Engel, Kristen Epperly, Alexa Oldenkamp, Gaba Palazzo, and Lexi Serreyn

Head coach Sheila McGill on the game: "We are super excited to get a win at home in front of our home fans. Not only late in the season, but on a day where we are playing the game we want to play in a fast possession style. We are looking forward to Sunday to do this one more time."
