Working tough and together mentality was evident in Women's Soccer match Sunday

10/3/2021 5:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer

St. Thomas gave conference powerhouse South Dakota State (10-1) a challenge in Sunday afternoon's game in Brookings. The Tommies never let up in ninety minutes of high intensity and combat.

The Jacks have finished in the top two of the Summit League every year since 2016, and St. Thomas battled right there with them in today's match. The Toms were physical, maintained high energy, and applied relentless pressure. Freshman Marli Bertagnoli was especially agile playing wide and created great opportunities for the attack. The Purple had nine shots with five on goal and spent ample time in SDSU territory.

Both teams came out fighting with the Jacks scoring early. St. Thomas was able to equalize off a strike to the far post from freshman Lexi Huber in the 18th minute. This was her third goal of the season, and first for the team against a conference opponent. Freshman Abby Brantner put up a tenacious fight to send the ball to junior Tess Phillips. Phillips was able to find Huber, who worked through traffic and found the back of the net. South Dakota State scored a go-ahead goal in the 37th minute, and an insurance goal in the 48th minute.

Sophomore Olivia Graupmann was strong and dynamic in goal and had nine saves for the Toms. She was supported by a sharp and relentless defense. Senior Natalie Engel and freshman Lissa Mizutani stepped into centerback roles and worked great together in the back. The Tommies were significantly outmatched in corners but were able to secure the box for all nine they faced. South Dakota State had twenty-one shots with twelve on goal, but the Purple stayed tough and organized. They were strong in communication, covered well for each other, and were able to shut down the Jacks' attack.

This concludes the women's road trip to South Dakota. St. Thomas (2-7-1) returns home to play Denver (6-5) on Friday, October 8th at 4:00 p.m. and Omaha (3-5-2) on Sunday, October 10th at 1:00 p.m.

Coach Sheila McGill on the game: "SDSU plays a fast possession, so our team had to pick and choose our moments to retaliate. We had to stay patient and take our chances when they came, together as a team. When we did, we were able to put great shots on frame, and secured our first Summit League goal. We focused on staying positive and working tough and together, and that was evident in our play."
